EU Entry/Exit System (EES): What UK Travellers Need to Know
Major Update on Border Checks Starts in Autumn 2025
The European Union is set to introduce the long-awaited Entry/Exit System (EES), bringing significant changes to the way non-EU nationals including UK citizens enter and leave the Schengen Area. Set to launch in autumn 2025, the EES aims to modernise and streamline border security across participating European countries.
When Does the EES Start?
Further to the EU announcement that the Entry/Exit System (EES) will launch on 12 October 2025 and the phased implementation will continue until 9 April 2026. From 10 April 2026, EES will be fully operational at all external borders of the EU. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated the travel advice for the European countries where the EES system will apply.
What Is the EES?
The EES is an automated IT system designed to register non-EU travellers every time they cross the EU's external borders. It will record key information including the date and place of entry and exit, as well as biometric data such as fingerprints and facial images. The goal is to replace the old system of manually stamping passports with a digital, more efficient process.
Key Changes for UK Travellers
- No More Passport Stamps: When entering or exiting the Schengen Area, UK travellers' documents will no longer be stamped. Instead, their entry and exit will be registered digitally.
- Biometric Data Required: On your first arrival after EES launches, you'll need to provide fingerprints and have your photograph taken at the border.
- Automated Border Gates: Many airports and seaports will use automated gates, speeding up the process for travellers but also requiring compliance with the new system.
- 90/180-Day Rule Enforced Digitally: The system will automatically track how long you've spent in the Schengen Area, making it easier for authorities to enforce the rule that allows stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
What Should UK Travellers Do?
If you're planning a trip to Europe after autumn 2025, allow extra time at borders, especially for your first journey under the new system. Make sure your passport is valid and be prepared to provide biometric data. Familiarise yourself with the 90/180-day rule to avoid overstaying.
The EES marks a significant shift in EU border management, prioritising security and efficiency while changing the travel experience for UK citizens in Europe. Keep an eye on official updates for the precise launch date and further guidance as autumn approaches.
